Practice advice

How to clean glasses without damaging the lenses

Rubbing dry lenses can drag dust across a coating. A gentle rinse, a suitable lens cleaner and a clean microfibre cloth are usually the safer everyday approach.

  1. 1. Rinse firstUse clean lukewarm water to remove loose dust. Avoid very hot water, which can be unkind to some coatings.
  2. 2. Clean gentlyUse an optical lens spray or a small amount of coating-safe cleaner. Avoid household glass cleaners.
  3. 3. Dry with microfibreUse a clean lens cloth rather than clothing, tissues or paper towel, which can leave fibres or fine marks.

If a coating looks crazed, cloudy or permanently marked, bring the glasses to the practice before trying a stronger product. Cleaning products for spectacles must never be used on contact lenses.
